I have never been laughed at, but then I keep a fairly low profile and am quiet. I have seen some loudmouths being laughed at; unfortunately, people think of that as "Americans being laughed at". And their response to everything (like a bunch of responders here) is "America is great, god bless America, we have freedom, we give you billions of dollars in aid" etc.
They fail to see that while they think America is great, others think their own countries are great, their own countries are blessed and their own countries also have freedoms.
As for giving billions of dollars of aid: we really don't give all that much when you consider per capita aid - other countries (Norway, Denmark) give more; when we give something, it comes with strings attached which make it next to impossible for that country's businesses to survive (we are just buying customers for our own companies) and we keep touting "we give"... no one likes that. And we always try to influence politics in various countries. Unless people bring up these things, no one laughs at them. And I don't bring up any of that. I think it's just a bunch of idiotic loudmouths that have spoiled our image.

I've lived overseas for several years now in England and Korea so I get that a lot but not everyone thinks that way.
People are generally pretty annoyed with the fact that we turned our back on all the help and sympathy offered to us from the international community after 9/11, and then we ask for support in fighting a war elsewhere.
Osama bin Laden is nowhere in sight, and I think it's a little funny that people say things like "We're so safe now because we haven't had a single terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11." Well, I was in England (which is our greatest ally, supposedly) during the 7/7 bombings. So while it's fine for us to put all this effort into stopping terrorism within our own borders, we haven't really done anything to make the world a safer place.
But as I say, most people in Korea, for example, will get to know you somewhat before they judge you.

They are suppose to be a super power, and have great "standing in the world". However there was a coup several years ago and either the most stupid and or most manipulated man took power. Then the majourity of the American public simply rolled over and took it. This is a sweeping generalisation as i know many americans who were morified by the government take over and protested. However the large majority simply let this man take over and basically rape it of any dignity and pride on a world scale. That is why America is generally the laughing tock of the world. No where else do its citazens prefere to live in ignorance and have civil liberties taken away becuase of over exadurated fear tactics.
Again its a generalisation, there are those who are doing something about it....

To me it is almost like the big dog on the block. Ignoring all of the little yelpers.
We use 33% of all the worlds reasources. without us 33% of the world that is now employed would not be. to me thta means SuperPower. we create 4 million jobs in our own country per year. The EU only created 1.7 million in 10 years. That is a SuperPower.
They judge us by our celebrities? Are celebrities are celbrities for their own reason.
I know lying under oath in most countries is assumed. But in America we want to hold our politicians to a higher standard. And have the most moral and just leading the country.
1) He had an affair in the oval office where the tax payers were
paying for it.
2) they think our Pres. comes off as uneducated Hick? This proves how deep of people who are laughing at us are.
And Europe helped cause and fuel most of the world wars?
Our companies give more aid than our government. And that is how it is in America.

Actually during my extensive travels through Europe I have found the English to have the reputation you are describing. Dancing naked on the bar in pubs, not being able to hold their liquor and don´t leave out the hooligans.
No I have not heard that Americans are regarded as a laughing stock nor have I witnessed them behaving as such.

I have been around the world.People are friendly if you care about there country. Most Americans don't care about other country's.I think that it will take someone special to get America under control in the next election.
I think that most country's don't understand why we responded with a military response after September 11Th.Plus the American people are viewed as being spineless say in Ireland and England.

I would like to answer, as respectfully as possible...
The world looks at America and sees a country that has deluded itself as being the Greatest Nation in the World. Thats a mighty big title, and should be given, rather than claimed.
The world looks at America and sees a country consumed with an insatiable appetite for celebrity. And the quality of the celebrity doesn't matter...Paris Hilton is an excellent example.
The world looks at America and sees a country that spent millions of taxpayers dollars to impeach a president. For what? Getting a ******* in the Oval Office. (Of course, I know it was for lying under oath...but what did he lie about? Getting a ******* in the Oval Office.)
The world looks at America and sees a President who comes off as an uneducated hick, everytime he speaks.
As compared to Europe, America is a relative newcomer to the world's stage. They are much like the kid who has transferred in from another school...and then tries to take over the school. Nobody really likes that kid, and laughs at him in the halls.

Only the US could turn the tragedy of 9/11 to the unbelievable mess in Iraq etc. I do not blame the American people as the Bush administration kicked it all off.

its not justified. Many people around the world admire us.. if theyre really are laughing at us why are they literally killing themselves trying to get here?
The ones that do laugh are generally jealous of what americans have. Or in the case of Iraq they think weve overstepped ourselves.. we'll see, time will tell on that issue where our leaders in the US are taking us

I think it's because generally they are completely ignorant of the world outside the USA. They think they are God's gift and they try to make sure everyone knows it.
The truth is, they are pretty thick really - they must be to have voted in that moron Bush not once but twice.
Yes, they are a laughing stock and I for one cannot stop guffawing whenever I hear or read about their latest idiocies.
