If I'm in third place and i pass the guy in second what place would i be in.

you would either be in second place or......
if you were a full lap behind the rest you would still be in third.

1st = guy
2nd= guy
3rd= you
you pass 2nd and it becomes
1st= guy
2nd= you
3rd= guy
so you pass the second guy and become second

the first guy remains ahead..and exchange of places takes place only btwn u n the 2nd guy..
