What is the difference between the "google search" and "I'm feeling lucky" buttons?

"I'm feeling lucky" is utterly useless, as many prank sites have been designed around "getting the lucky button" if you type such and such on Google.
The first button gives you a selection of choices for your search, and "I'm feeling lucky" only gives you what would have been the first off of that list.
One well-known prank is to type "French military victories" and hit "I'm feeling lucky" a prank page shows up that looks like google (but isn't actually google) that asks "Did you mean 'French military defeats?'"

The google search button will give all the websites in a list, whereas the i'm feeling lucky button will just take you directly to the first website that the search throws up.
