... (In the buffyverse) Why are hell mouths in the ground? I mean, what's so special about the ground? - We're moving through space and earth is just a ball - why earth? I mean, they're always holes, they always go DOWN, why not up?

Cos theoretically, Hell is down there, so it stands to reason that demon holes are in the ground. Not that it really matters I guess, but the writers decided that made sense I suppose. Love Buffy!

I guess it's because some consider hell to be the center of the earth.

Because hell is supposed to be below us, hence, the only way to access it would be below us, in the ground.
