Problem: We need to know the species of tree. Hundreds of trees are made into bonsai shapes. Possibly you are keeping an outdoor bonsai in the house, and that will kill it, no matter what kind of soil, light, water, you are using. Please send a photo or description of the foliage to me at:
wchoat@american-bonsai.com . Meanwhile, you have done the right thing of getting the roots covered with the soil so they don't get dry. If it had rocks glued together on top of the soil, get rid of them. Any plant's roots "catch on" by being in soil where they can get the nutrients and moisture to send up to the branches, and this is one step in keeping it alive. NEXT, we have to determine if you are keeping it in the right place. You're welcome to read my Bonsai Care page on:

You haven't said how long it stayed out of it's pot,if replanted without delay, the plant would not have lost a lot of moisture & would stand a better chance of survival.Firm the soil around the roots by tapping with the palm of your hand, especally around the trunk, keep in a shady plave for about a week & gardually move to it's original spot .When repotting bonsai which is usually done evry few years a good number of smaller roots are teased from the root ball & cut away, they cope well with this procedure so i'm sure your's will do just fine.
