Human beings need reasons to celebrate as otherwise life becomes gloomy. So if you need an excuse to celebrate go ahead, otherwise nothing is stopping you from enjoying everyday !

Valentines day was originally a memorial to Saint Valentine. A Saint that married young couples despite the wishes of Emporer Claudius II. He was beheaded for his actions. But like most things that have a potential for profit, the story was forgotten and the tradition of proving your love by shelling out money once a year was started. But personally there's nothing wrong with that. We are a free market country and if you have an idea and can make a buck then more power to you.

Valentine's day isn't necessary, but a good idea. What isn't necessary is the frantic promoting of cards, chocolate, lingerie and anything else that could be remotely connected to Valentine's day.

Not necessary in its absolute sense. Rather we can celebrate/ convert everyday into a VALENTINE'S DAY by showering immence, selfless love to our dear ones, viz. our old parents , our brothers, our sisters, our other relatives, our friends and in general less fortunate ones; so that the whole world is filled with love and borders among nations disappear. You mean utopian dream, huh! why can't we all give it a try?

It's not necessary, but ti's a great way to show your emotions for someone since everyone else is doing it on the same day.

Its a fun holiday when you are in love. Ohio also has "sweetest day", which is kind of like Valentines day for your sweetie. Many people, even here dont celebrate sweetest day. It is like another optional Valentines day.

Why yes it is lonely lonesome!! I love Valentines day. People who are cheap, alone, and unhappy dislike valentines day. It's not about the gift's you can make something. It's about showing the one you love that you appreciate them.

I oppose any holidays that don't have any religious or historic significance. My wife will tell you that I consider every day to be Valentine's Day.
