Each persons can be different and passed differently. It is basically a lot like "snot". Some women have whitish/yellowish plugs but it is more common to have some pink or blood tinge to it as well. It can pass in smaller bits over a days or more (like you get a gob each time you wipe) or it can be more of a one chunky glob. A lot of women find they pass it most when using the bathroom...

It is a slimy mucosy, sometimes blood tinged blob..and yes it can come out in pieces...
Not everyone notices that they have lost it either. I just had a baby 12/22/06 and I didn't ever see it come out which kinda surprised me because when you are pregnant you tend to look at the toilet paper when you wipe cause you need to make sure you don't have any blood (which could indicate a problem)...
So, be patient, and good luck!! Oh pregnancy is so fun!!

Mine looked like a quarter-sized blood clot with some yellow stuff close to it. Here's what I got from JustMommies.com:
Some women describe the mucous plug as looking more like the mucous in your nose. It may look like a thick glob of stringy mucous, thicker than what you would see with normal vaginal secretions. If you are close to going into labor you may see pink, brown, or red blood around the edges of the mucous plug. This is called the “bloody show."
Hope this helps!

Not sure what it looks like, but when mine came out, it felt like a cork gun shot. I didn't know what had happened until I stood up and felt water gush.
I've also heard other people say that it can break apart and come out in pieces.
