"How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?

Well, if friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme,
Then I can't help but have my suspicions
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem.
And you said you was never intending
To break up our singing this way,
But there ain't any use in pretending.
It could happen to us any day.

How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?

Oh, your friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme.
But I can't help but have my suspicions
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem.
Oh, you said you was never intending
To break up our singing this way,
But there ain't any use in pretending.
It could happen to us any day.

And how long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
How long?
How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
How long?
How long has this been going on? "

I've got a feeling you're after the 70's hit for Ace, "How Long" (Has This Been Going On). Ace featured singer Paul Carrack, who went on to become one of the two singers for Mike & The Mechanics. Rod Stewart also recorded a version of this on his "Tonight I'm Yours" album in the 80's.

Well, that lyric is in a lot of songs, a lot of songs with that actual title, too? Is it the 70's soft rock version you're referring to or the Van Morrison Jazzy version you're referring to? http://www.amazon.com/How-Long-This-Been-Going/dp/B000004706/sr=1-1/qid=1171457879/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4601609-4888956?ie=UTF8&s=music
I like the the 70's one: BY HALL & OATES. Love it!
