Hi Small,
In some countries valentine's day is more like a commercial day, you see all this promotion on tv and stores. Even more sad is the ones that don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend and have to remember they are alone.
I guess everyone has their own "valentine day" which could be the day they start dating or a special occasion. This is really more sincere!
P.S- In my country we celebrate the "dating day" June 12th, also have nothing to do with San valentine!

You know it is interesting that holidays are more and more becoming all about what to give and what to get as opposed to the actual meanings. It has been a long standing belief that Valentine's Day was a Hallmark Holiday. Which in fact seems to be very true. However if you choose not to participate in this holiday you will fast find yourself in the dog house with the one you love. It is unfortunate that there is a double standard with this holiday. The man must search out a wonderful and thoughtful gift and in the end receives little or nothing in return. Talk about one sided.

Honestly, yes. There are too many who prefer to have a single day to tell their mate, etc, that they love them. Though I could be altruistic and say no, when we love we let them know all the time, its just not so. I'm guilty myself of forgetting to let my loved ones know....the pace of our lives is so fast, so hectic, that we barely have time to do the things that need doing, never mind the things we WANT to do.
Though, the commercialism associated with the day is appalling, its true. And, I will agree that there are those who "show off"....after all, the day did begin as a saints day..a way to commemorate a good mans good acts....I once saw a program that claimed that only in America are St. Valentines Day and Halloween celebrated with such gross excess and consumerism. I really do wonder...who else around the world celebrates St. Valentines Day?

"The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
The history of Valentine's day can be traced back to an obscure Catholic Church feast day, said to be in honor of Saint Valentine. The day's associations with romantic love arrived after the High Middle Ages, during which the concept of romantic love was formulated."
So really people are just doing what they did in the medieval time period, only a more modern version instead of pigging out a banquet.

Not really it's just so commercialized. We were brought up to celebrate if you remember ever getting little cards in school. In other countries it's not a big commercial holiday in order to make profit b/c most Americans were brought up to celebrate it. In a twisted way we're all brainwashed lol. But if you truly love someone show it everyday so Valentine's Day is just another day for you two.

I am glad that you brought that question up. Some young couples need it to remind them and because it's an old tradition. But generally,it's to show off and can be a cover up. Every boy and girl these days dont always keep together....but they keep on changing partners.

I don't think that we need valentines day to remind us, but it does help and allow some people express their feelings towards others in a way that they wouldn't be able to. I don't like the fact restaurants, and florist and card shops exploit it and put up their prices but then again that is society on the whole

I love my husband every day but we just use it as another reason to buy gifts for each other SOME people actually like to give presents just to see their partners face light up one more time. We dont need these things but it is nice to know that the other person took the time to find something you like it makes you feel special

No not to remind us, but just perhaps to set 'one' day aside, to
celebrate it. A special day, in a special way. That's all.
Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!
