The shifting of the five basic gear speeds and one reverse gear speed is mechanical with pneumatic booster. The first gear speed and reverse gear speed are engaged with a gear coupling, the other gear speeds are fitted with fail-safe synchromesh. The shifting of the two optional constant meshes is effected by a synchronised coupling controlled electro-pneumatically, by pre-selector on the gearshift lever. The lubrication of the gearbox is forced, with the help of a gear pump driven by the lay shaft.

"...optional constant meshes is ..." refers to whatever a sychromesh is, i assume its something fitted on the gears to keep them from slipping or grinding. so in other word the sychromesh is option but if you have it, it is constantly working.
that was a poorly written paragraph if that makes you feel any better.
