Its impossible for a computer to render audio without speakers more than likely the computers you're referring to had speakers built into the monitor.

All computers can play music with out speakers, the problems is no one will be able to here anything, some older computers might have a internal speaker installed, for the error beeps and so forth, some even have speakers built in to the monitor.
to discover if your computer can play music without external speakers disconnect your speakers and play a music track from a CD or from yahoo music and see if you can hear anything ? if you can then you have a internal speaker in your computer somewhere, easy as that. good luck

Most computers have a single, low end speaker inside them for "beeping" error codes if the PC does not boot properly. Those speakers can be used for playing music (if you are not to picky about the quality). In many office and business settings, they have the internal speakers disabled to prevent people for annoying their neighbors with their music. Also some newer computers do not include internal speakers.
About the only way to find out of your PC can play music is to try it. (Unless you want to open the case and look inside - but not recommended :-) )

Thats the PC speaker, a little speaker on the inside. It normally sounds like crap to play music with, though. You can find it listed in the volume control either down on the lower right side of the task bar( click twice to bring up the advanced menu), or in the control panel. Open up the properties tab, and there should be a list of all the possible speakers. but just because it's listed doesnt mean it is available.

Every computer has a small built-in speaker, but this would not be capable of playing music (it can only sound beeps for errors.)
Your computer at your previous job probably had speakers built into the monitor.

depends on the computer most desktops require external speakers to play music. but most laptops have built in speakers.
there is a set of speakers available that mount in 1 of the cdrom slots in a tower but you still have to plug them into the sounds card on the back of the computer they come with a special expansion slot cover with a hole in it to get the wire out of the back of the case to plug it in the speaker plug on the sound card.
i've owned quite a few desktops systems and as i rcall the internal speaker was only for beep codes to do with booting the system a lot of the more modern desk tops have either mounted it on the motherboard or eliminated all together and play the beeps thru the soundcard.

I don't think this is possible. Your previous computer might not have had external speakers, but would have had built in speakers, which your current one does not have. Then again, your new computer might not have a sound card, or might not have the sound card drivers installed.
This happened with my new laptop, which had built in Altec Lansing speakers, and soundcard, but did not have drivers installed. I had to go to the HP site, download the drivers and install them.
Check with your sys admin.

Most will have an audio socet at the back, for head phones (I use this). However, the only option open without speakers is electronic music (Think Donkey Kong) that sometimes gets played on old games.

If you have no sound card you can get the windows speaker driver. I assume that you have no sound card because speakers are cheep to buy and if you have a sound card that would be the way to go. You can get the windows speaker driver here.
Install and Use the PC Speaker Driver with Windows

Pretty well all computers have a small internal speaker for things like the POST error code beeps, if they have real start-up problems.
