In simpler terms:

Because your car may have 6 bolts, and the rims have 5 holes. Or it may be because they are HUGE and won't leave the wheels turning room when you put tires on them.

Most likely because of the offset on the rims to accommodate the bigger brakes and spindles on the evo is different,
or that the EVO has a beefier spindle assembly and more bolts on the pattern to withstand the high HP output stress on the wheels.
On the evo cars, they may also flare the fenders a bit to make room for bigger wheels that would grip the road better.

So you may be looking at one or more of these problems, its up to you to get the specifications and see if your car has compatible specifications or not. But these are the most common problems with fitting wheels on similar models.

If going with 18 inch tire and rim kit on your 2012 golfing you will possibly elect 18x8 sized rims. And confident, 225/40-18 could be the right sized tire for one in all those kit on your particular motor vehicle. .
