Hi
It's interesting that i was just writing about ligaments and how to mend them today...
this is what i said... "If i could get the range, i can strengthen it all later, is kinda my phylosophy. I figured the ligaments were set, nice and tight, which should make it much more difficult to "sprain" my thumb or wrist in the future, because they tighten when they regrow from damage, tighter and tighter except when they are used, when they stretch, if they don't get stretched they heal tight, but if they do get stretched they don't shrink back all the way and instead mend stretched or looser making a sprain of thumb wrist or ankle more likely than if otherwise left alone, of course you must keep the muscles active around the area too to keep their strength because if they get weak the sprain chances go back up, so rather than no movement, small movements.
"
I spoke of ligaments in general, but specifically i was speaking to the hand...
You can see more of what i wrote here...

Go get checked. I tore my ankle ligaments 9 yrs ago and I still have problems. I thought it was a sprain, I took it easy for a couple of weeks, the pain went away, but I can no longer sleep on my stomach with my feet pointed out because my whole foot stays locked in that position and it is quite painful.

I no how you feel. Same problem here. The swelling hasnt gone down at all really. And it gets stiff and worse and then better. I went to the phsiotherapist orignally and my dad paid like £40 for a session. It didnt even help that well. I personally dont think it is worth it. But if you live in England try and get it on the NHS. I just rest it a bit when it gets bad, but i would go to the doctors if I was you. My mum seems to think I am just messing around. But take a trip to the docs and see what they think.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Be patient and see a physiotherapist. Ligament damage is the worst due to healing time. If you try to over do it you will re-damage what has healed. Also invest in orthotics with a really good shoe. That will help stabilize your ankle.
Good luck.

Rest! Go to the doc, get a scan if necessary, and if there are major tears, get surgery.
The cheapest way is resting, if you think it's not that serious.
But... six months?
