If you like to play games, watch movies, listen to music and surf the internet and you don't mind making extra effort to learn how to do it, PSP.

If you just want to play games or you are a kid. DS.

I would say DS hands down.

I bought a PSP when it came out because I thought it would revitalize the hand held market and challenge Nintendo's dominance by giving us some real innovation (like the original Playstation did). I bought Twisted Metal, Wipeout Pure, Ape Escape, Coded Arms, Lumines, and a couple of other games. I played the system for around 15 hours or so? I just never picked it up. My problem with PSP is that so many of the games look fantastic, but are PS2 ports or are just plain boring. Why would I play SOCOM or Metal Gear on PSP when I could just bust out the PS2? That always bugged me. Why would I want a crappy second rate iPod with nowhere near the storage capcity or the quality for photo, video, and music storage? I HAVE an iPod. I also have a laptop computer for my portable internet needs. So the "well rounded" mutlti-media aspect of the PSP never did anything for me either.

Frankly, when the DS first came out I was unimpressed. The backlighting sucked, the games were almost all N64 ports, and I thought the two screens were unnecessary and hokey.

Then the DS Lite came out and I got to demo it. Wow. I traded in my PSP and I have never regreted it. I have probably put in at least 75-125 hours into it since I got in in June of 2006. The games are great and the touch screen/dual screen thing is great! Nintendo really stepped up to the plate and delivered new games that let you experience gaming in a whole new way.

Nintendo has delivered some wonderful innovative games like Trauma Center ER, Meteos, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, great Castlevania games, Mario, etc...or even kooky (but fun) stuff like Warioware Touched where you use the touch screen exclusively. If you get a DS, get a DS Lite and enjoy!

If you really want an idea about how people see DS versus the PSP...consider that the Japanese cannot keep them in stock. They sell like 700,000 units in JAPAN every month! Nobody cares about the PSP in Japan, though. Google sales figures for both of them and you will see that the PSP is only doing moderately well in America because of the way it has been marketed and hyped.
