can you play guitar hero without the guitar thingy? do you reccomend the game? do you have to be able to play the guitar and read music notes to play this game? LOL!

You do need the guitar controller, as I understand it, but it usually comes packaged with Guitar Hero, so you don't need to worrying about buying it separately or anything like that. It's a very simplified guitar-looking controller. Instead of actual frets, it's got five buttons on the neck, and instead of strings it has a sort of switch that you can "strum" with your thumb.
In the game, the notes that you play are represented by big colored dots that correspond to the colors on the neck. You hold down the buttons that it shows you and you strum when it comes time to play the note. If you've ever played Dance Dance Revolution, the system that it uses to show you what to play is very similar to the system that DDR uses to show you where to dance. So, no, you don't need to know how to play guitar (in fact, most people that I know who play guitar find that they usually do worse at this game, since they're trying to actually play.) All you need is timing and coordination.
It's a lot of fun, and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. It's like playing air guitar, except you've got a system, it actually affects what you hear, and you've got a crowd of people screaming for you.

Although you could play the game with a controller, it will take a lot of fun out of it.
Furthermore, the game is more difficult, as there is no visual connection between the frets on the screen representing the buttons on your gamepad.
The Frets on the screen are arranged like the buttons on the guitar, this makes it easier to concentrate on the song instead of thinking about which button on the pad represents wich fret.
And since there are no real notes in the game, you don't need to know how to play a real guitar.
Get the game and the controller. Its fun and your money well spent.

No you need the guitar to play this game. It is a really fun game and easy to play at first. Once you turn the difficulty up it is hard but fun to try to play the songs. I recommend this game for anyone who wants to play a fun game while listening to great songs.
