I know this is going to sound insane, but you could always... get the files.

With some more information I could help you.
What version of mame?
What game?
Find the rom and post the size of the rom file (IE: 145kb)

In general you may just have a bad rom you can look for a better one on a different sight (if you even have downloaded the rom)

You may need another rom, (IE 9ball shootout (set 2), you need 9ball shootout (set 1))

You may need a bios file (they are like roms and placed in the rom folder but are additional data needed to run rom files for a specific platform ie NEOGEO)

And lastly you may need a chd file (harder to get, takes time to download because of the size of the files being over 1gig.)
