Well, I live in Germany, and I have seen little children spending all their pocket money for Katrina victims and so after 9/ 11 .....they organized bazaar's and charity "parties " .
Germany had donation hot-lines and I think a big bunch of the German citizens donated money and cared a lot.
Maybe the amount of 10 bucks is not too much money if it is spend by only one person. But it is a lot of money if it was all the money that single person had.

It MAY seem like that, yes. We often neglect our own poor, disabled, retired and elderly poor because there are countries that need help so desperately, thousands dying daily of starvation and/or malnutrition, diseases and illnesses that can be easily cured or managed for a few dollars a day, people suffering famines, droughts, floods, earthquakes... and we do not care if their governments are our enemies... because we care about people regardless of their ethnic background or religious background... our own country is composed of people from all over the world, that's why we care.
The ONLY country that has repeatedly come to our aid in times of floods, droughts, earthquakes and terrorist attacks (9/11) has been our good neighbors to the north, Canada! They have shown themselves to be not just good neighbors but extraordinarily great caring people of peace and have NEVER asked for anything in return!
EDITED: Mrs C., the reason you may think we "interfere" is because we wish to promote equal rights to all (that includes women) and we want all to enjoy human rights... and we want to teach others receiving our aid to be self-sufficient so that we do not have to "take care" of them with handouts for an eternity, so that we can also help others! I'm sorry if you do NOT believe that, but you are entitled to your own beliefs, however wrong they may be. In case you're not aware of it, we have even helped re-build those that fought against us (Germany, Japan, for example) and we STILL send aid to Cuba through the United Nations, inasmuch as much of that aid is not seen by the populace that curses us as a "show" to Fidel and his regime!

A good recording to check out is 'The Americans' written by Gordon Sinclair and performed by Byron MacGregor . It puts that issue 'front and center' .

Get used to it! One of the things that supporters of Bush's war tend to realize is that even after we leave we will be sending BILLIONS of U.S. taxpayer dollars (every year) to the new Iraqi government. Economic and military aid to Iraq will take a bite out of EVERY budget for at least the next decade.

We do have other countries helping us.
They invest in our corporations.
They loan us money when we need it through our bonds.
Our country has a huge national debt. Who do you think we're in debt to?
How is it that we've been able to survive financially all of these years? With the help of other nations. And you know... it's really sad.
They haven't forgotten.
We're almost $9 trillion dollars in the hole and it's growing everyday. If anything, we need a country to help us with our accounting instead of profiting from our poor accounting.

Yeah... help.
With help like killing Allende and installing Pinochet, helping the Contras, helping the Mujahideen, giving weapons to Iran, trying NOT to broker a cease fire between Israel and Lebanon in their latest war, etc.

Because America is the most powerful and richest country in the world.
With great power comes great responsibility.
I would rather be the first one to help than the last one.

Americans need to learn to help themselves. And i dont mean help themselves to what they like. Start by choosing someone who actually wants to help other people and other people might start helping you .

if you look at these figures on this site, (info from CIA world fact book). you will find that in fact the U.S. does not give all that much considering its wealth and most of that budget goes to one single country and a majority of the rest is military aid. this is one of the reasons why so many 3rd world countries are turning to china to help build their infrastructure, allowing china to tie up their oil concessions.
