It is very annoying when you are told you lose and your opponent has taken only one pawn. The games are cut too short to tell who is the winner.

At Grandmaster level, they will often resign if they are two pawns behind. However, in your game, there's no way to tell what will happen, so it's almost certainly a psychological trick.

in reversi game, a beginner can lose easily if he or she starts - either 1st or 2nd which i have forgotten.

in chess, i am not too sure.

try not to play chess with someone who says you will lose before the game starts as this is quite pyschological.
