Even if you like rock or country, learn classical style first.
Learn every string note, practicing them open with the right hand using the thumb as bass. Use every finger on your right hand except the pinky. Never rest it on the guitar. Repeat downward picking patterns over and over.
Next begin learning the notes on the frets. Think alphabet and it is crucial to know your whole steps and half steps. Use all four fingers on the neck keeping the thumb at the bottom. Practice makes perfect.
Buy a beginning guitar book, I could go on all day.
