You do need a passport to travel to France. This will be checked at the Dover Ferry Port before you get to the Ferry. Passports are checked by the French Immigration officials just after you enter Dover Western Docks. Just follow the car signs (if you have pre-booked) otherwise go to the Passenger Information point (on the Right as you enter Dover Docks, just after the last roundabout.

Of course you need a passport. It's a different country.

You must show your passport before you will be allowed to leave the UK. It doesn't matter what transport you use, whether its a car, train, plane or ship, you won't get very far without one.
