Quite possibly because it was considered essential for survival...considering the number of stupid people in the world, I would hazard a guess that my assumption has a bit of truth in it...

Civilization over rides Darwinian selection in many cases. It used to be that stupidity was almost universally fatal but the cushion of civilization has made it possible for morons to reproduce and pass on the stupid part of their make up. In some cases stupidity is still fatal as shown on the web site www.darwinawards.com

Quite simple:
Assuming there is a genetic component to stupidity:
If you are stupid enough to have hot, steaming sex with somebody in the heat of the moment without thinking about precautions, your children will carry your lack of judgement with them.
If you are smart enough to think of lots of precaution, you won't have any children to pass your brilliance on to.
So you might even say there exists a tendency towards stupidity :)

It may have something to do with humans taking control of their own natural evolution.
Stupid people don't die as often or frequently as they used too.
I have no proof of this concept, but it seem as good as anything i have heard.

I think it has a lot to do with liberal politics, but my theory has not completed peer review.
