They don't normally affect your grade point average, but they affect whether or not you get into your school's honor society and which colleges will accept you. They look for "well-rounded" students (students who take a wide variety of courses and participate in volunteer and extra-curricular activities). Colleges also want students who challenge themselves in their senior year, instead of taking a light load of courses.
If you are not planning on going to college, then joining clubs that are related to your field definitely help! Employers like to see that. It shows that you are serious about what you want to do.

In terms of academic standing, one usually has nothing to do with the other. Academic standing usually refers to GPA.
Should you take extracurricular activities? Depends on where you want to go for school. If you are competing against other students for a spot in a program, then yes. Otherwise, no.
