Research has found that we cannot learn when we feel too much stress. But, we need SOME stress to learn. We can learn how to cope with stressful situations by experiencing stressful situations. It's like building a muscle to be stronger. At first, we can't lift very much weight. But, if we lift a handweight every day, our muscle gets stronger. Then, we can add weight and build even stronger muscles by lifting it. Same with stress. Part of a good education is to give students stressful experiences to make them stronger.

As a teacher I find that a majority of what I teach and the studying the students do is regulated by state mandates. Teachers do not necessarily have a choice in the matter any more.

The school work is what solidifies what has been taught and prepares students for life after school, but there has to be a limit. If too much is crammed down your throat you will not remember any of it. It is a delicate balance that is hard to find and different for every student.

Perhaps it's so that when you graduate you can re-write this question the way it should be written. "If teachers speak of the betterment of the students, then why do they provide them with so many (studies are a countable noun) stressfull studies? /so much(homework is un-countable) stressful homework?" Hang in there because there really is a pay-off for all this effort in the real world :)
