Underwear is under your clothes and panties was a marketting phrase to make women's underpants sound more feminine and attractive.

"Underwear" is obviously in contrast to "outerwear", i.e. the clothing you wear either under or over other clothing.

I think "panties" must be a derivative of "pants"---i.e. "little pants."

And actually, both sexes do call it "underwear"---the broad term for panties, bras, T-shirts, camisoles, shorts, briefs, etc.

And since it is 5:15 and I have not yet had any coffee, I do feel I have "covered" this very thoroughly and deserve 10 points to start my day!

I can't stand to hear/say the word "panties". I don't know why. It drives me crazy!

I'm a girl and I wear underwear. Its under what I wear!

Just say no to the P-word and start the trend its UNDERWEAR!

I think 'panties' is an abbreviation of 'underpants'. I DETEST the word 'panties', it just sounds disgusting! In Australia we call them 'undies' (both genders).

The term underwear can mean things other than p------ .
Underwear can be singlets and bras, so you have to say p------ to indicate which item you mean. Men's are called underpants, but that just doesn't seem right for ladies' p------ .
