I have a very old laptop from 1998 that I wanted to use to take advantage of free wireless Internet. I walked around with in on city streets and it hurt my back because it was too heavy. I am thinking of getting a new laptop that would not be burdensome to walk around with. What laptops currently on sale are light enough to be carried around in a backpack or a briefcase for long periods of time?

With today's laptops, almost any laptop fits the requirements you put forth. Just remember, don't overload the backpack with too many accessories, and you'll have no problems.
I have found that my briefcase from Targus fits the bill, if I'm not carrying it too far, cause, if I carry it much, it gets to be unwieldy, and I have to change it from hand to hand.. A backpack, however, makes it easier to tote around.

Greetings Patrick from footprintsdownunder here.

personally I go for Mac the iBookG4 it is light compact and very robust. Also look for the new Sony range there are some good ones there but no where as good or strong as the Mac. The new ones have a magnetic power cable very good idea.

Another good one a bit older is the HP / Compaq NC6220 a very robust long lasting pc if you have to have a pc
