Regardless of the previous events, it is a huge mess now because all troops need to leave to prevent further casualties / prove that the new government is self sustainable, but they can't leave as they need to prevent civillian casualties and the government from collapsing!
My personal opinion, is that this nation on the edge of limbo will suffer sectarian violence for generations to come, and if the allied troops pull out, the southern shi'ite part of iraq will be annexed by Iran, to form a 'Greater-Iran'. Although this may not seem as a problem, it will make the cynical politicians crazy and could initiate another middle eastern war. That's if; the nuclear power of iran / Israel / fact that the American government is mad don't cause a war before that

A mess only in terms of Iraqis and our medias portrayal.
It is a huge success in terms of the US administration.
1. Destabalised oil to double the price and raked in trillions of dollars.
2. Constructed permanent military bases (they're not going anywhere)
3. Further demonisation of anyone muslim.
4. Started a civil war needed to keep the country (soon to be made 3 counties) unstable. So the US can permanently intervene for their best interests.
5. Perfect location to shore up the Gulf. Strike on Iran is made easier and US's hegemony in the region is made certain. Done before the Chinese get their hands on it.

Not really a mess. The killing rate is about 1/3 of what it is in South Africa, and nobody seems to blame Nelson Mandela for that!
The "mess" is constantly fuelled by Iran and Syria, not to mention the gleeful contribution of the Dems in US Congress.
BTW, did you know how Lincoln treated the Congressmen and Senators who undermined the US war effort?
I too hope that it will all end well- both for the sake of the free people of Iraq and Afghanistan and for the sake of their US/ coalition rescuers.

I believe the Americans will only save face if they commit their troops to helping all the people, irrespective of their religious grouping,
to rebuild homes for all those poor people who are now homeless, using local builders & craftspeople, everything paid for by diverting the flow of money to weaponary.
The USA could also help by building hospitals to care for the Iraqi wounded, training new doctors & nurses, building new schools etc., to repair the infrastructure tattered by their bombs... & organising a huge international relief force, to pull Iraq back from the civil war that is obviously waging there.
That is the correct way to make the best use of troops.
Yes, have armed protection in case nutters still want to kill you for helping them...
I don't know why America doesn't take this opportunity to do good.
If they withdraw now, leaving the poor Iraqi people to suffer more than suffered under that sadist Saddam, that would be deplorable & that would do absolutely zilch to help repair their image in the world.
The world needs America. America may have loads wrong - but at least the people there have lots to offer other countries who are really suffering. There are so many ways America could help to reduce social suffering. I really, really, really wish their President had the guts to stand up & say his action campaign is gonna change! He's gonna do it right. he's gonna set a new agenda. He's going to arrange rescue packages... that are free to anyone who needs them... He really does need to do that. We all realise that, the ONLY trouble is, that he is probably one of the very few people on this planet, that isn't clued up on that.
So, could someone please wise this guy up quick before it's all too late???
