whats the difference?

when you say " a guy i go with", does it mean just one guy? or could be more than one? or do you say the guy i go with?

"The guy I go with told me it was true." Implies that you are dating (going with) one and only one guy at this time.
"A guy I go with told me it was true." Implies, though it does not absolutely have to mean, that you are currently dating more than one guy.

a guy I go with sounds like more than one guy, The guy I'm dating makes it more clear.
