You might try James Michener's historical novels. If you're not familiar with his work he wrote epic novels that span long periods of time. The characters are usually fictional but the the stories take place in the context of accurate historical events and you really get a better feel for the history and what it was like to live in those days than you do from a dry history text and they're a lot more readable. Michener was arguably the greatest American author. His work is as good as literature gets.

Michener novels which cover American history and which I can personally recommend include Chesapeake, Alaska, Centennial, Texas and Michener's undisputed masterpiece - Hawaii.

If you haven't read any Michener I recommend you start with Hawaii. It is awesome.

I you are looking for historical fiction, Mount Vernon Love Story by Mary Higgins Clark is a great book about George and Martha Washington. It is very easy to understand. I'm not a big historical fiction fan, but this book was really very good.
