What does the stardate mean? When they announce it which is the month, day, year, etc????

Well I dont exactly know other than its a system of recording time in space based on the movement o f stars/ speed o flight or what ever after all they were zooming around space in hyper drive travelling distances that would take thousands of year to cover at normal speed. I think the actual dates are made up because some vulcans on the other side of the galaxy are not going to be too concerned about what day, month or year it is on earth- hence the "stardate" concept. I used to try to work that one out myself and couldnt even work out where they would get some fixed location or fixed point in time on which to base the stardate system- Maybe some intergalactic traveller out there will let us all know how it works.
