It is true that we always need a new start. Everyday is a new day, every second spend is a new second a second ago. A ship that move with yesterday wind is like us moving in life looking backward, living in the past. But the past is no longer exist.
So when one keep looking at yesterday, he/she will miss today. However, it is today that we have, not yesterday or tomorrow for yesterday is today at a day ago and tomorrow is today in one day time. Try walking backward, you will not go far, it's either you end up in someplace else or fall into a drain.

It also means what carry us is the wind, not the ship. We human beings believe we control our own fate. Not always true. Some stupid people become successful. Some smart people lose every penny they have, simply because they are not lucky. Ship here symbolizes our will, winds here represents outside factors that we can not predict or control. So, we must keep open-minded and be ready to accept bad fate, and, sure good fate as well.

Nice saying! What was driving you in a previous period of your life, that spark that lit your fire and gave you so much energy, no longer has the same force once its time is past...the fire turns to embers, then to ash, and it is time to move on.
Here is a poem with a slightly different twist:
By Joy E. Walker Steward
For Everything There's a Season
We may not know the reason
For all of life's suffering and pain,
But we know everything has its season,
So the sunshine will follow the rain;
There are even times when the sun shines
While the rain is still pouring down,
Those moments of grace God sends us,
Reminders that He's still around;
So when adversity's fire is burning,
Expect a cooling breeze;
Know that God is right in it with you
As He moves your growth to achieve;
Embrace His tender compassion
But yield to His discipline too
For the father loves each of his children
And knows best how to nurture you;
When life's pruning is painful,
Don't let bitterness enter your soul,
For when pruning is done you'll be better,
Your heart and your spirit whole;
So if this is your season for weeping,
Know your tears will end with the night,
For joy always comes in the morning
When faith gives way to sight.

No it cannot sail on back with yesterday's wind. Everything is ever-changing-these 4 elements are spontaneously changing-earth, water, wind and fire." We cannot step twice to the same river for yet other waters are flowing on- nor we can breathe the same air from the wind for other winds are yet to sway on"-Heraclitus.

Stick to the present, not the past. This is where we all live our lives, isn't it?
