Depends - some batteries you do and some you don't - as a rule - if they pop off - take them off before charging

Yes, you may need to use a screwdriver to remove them. The caps need to be removed as explosive gases are produced when the battery is being charged, removing the caps prevents these gases building up.
Remember to ensure that the battery charger is switched off when connecting & disconnecting it, this will prevent sparks & therefore stop the battery exploding.

When you charge a battery highly flammable hydrogen gas is given off, so you need to remove them so that the gas does not build up inside the battery, that is why they say charge a battery in a well ventilated room away from naked flames & sparks.

Not if they are ventilated. If not ventilated, unscrew, check fluid, put caps back in place to stop any spray etc but don't screw in. Charge at a low rate then check fluid, screw down plugs.
