Can anyone tell me (and I am a woman by the way!) why on earth shopping makes some people feel better when they're feeling depressed?

My 34 year old daughter has a bad habit of doing this.
She uses credit cards & spends way beyond her means, frighteningly so! She doesn't listen to advice either.
I believe she has got into this habit as a "cheap" fix for her other problems - it's an easy distraction from those.
She can kid herself she is something she is not. She likes those Jackie Collins books all about money, glamour & power, so as she swans around, gaily saying "oh, I'll have this & that" in her mind she is one of those characters... She buys tons of stuff she doesn't need. She buys mainly crap, cos she wants it, a bit like a magpie attracted to shiney stuff. It's so sad!!!
Her house is brimming with shoes she'll never wear, her wardrobes are so stuffed full but I'll bet she still can't find anything she really likes to wear.
If only she would learn some self-control!
Yeh, I accept she's bored with life, & she is actually lonely - but if she was just a bit less shallow, those problems would be cured.
Problem is, she doesn't listen to me... whatever I do or say is wrong, in her mind... she gets aggressive...
I blame the material world she grew up in- that & the poverty she has suffered. Yeh, it's a combination of all that + greed! & maybe other factors too, as previous answers state.

I admit I am addicted. Shopping malls are made to be attractive. I just feel I have a need. Buying is a feeling of power. In the family it's called shopping therapy. I am not a gambler or a drinker or a smoker so I have the funds to go shopping. I really should stay home and organize the things I have bought but maybe I just feel lonley and it seems that I always need more and cannot resist a bargain. Just writting this makes me aware that I have a problem hmmm what to do perhaps go shopping and not think about it perhaps I don't have a life. I work 7 days a week so I need a break excuses excuses even to me I sound like an addict. Why do I do it ? OK you have me questioning my actions and not finding any good reasons so thanks for the question.......

Im not addicted to shopping but i do love a good shopping spree every now and again. Just makes me feel happy having lots of new things. Only problem is they get old then and you have to do it all over again.

Addiction - to the chemical that your brain produces by performing this behavior. The chemicals reinforce the behavior through the "feeling" they provide.

Because if you buy some new clothes that you feel you look good in, then you will feel better.
