It depends on who you ask. But personally i believe that neither are more imprtant. Humans just have more power. And they use that power!

This may surprise you because I am an animal rights activist (a peaceful one, not an 'extremist' as the media would like you to believe BTW).. but..
I believe human lives are more important, because we are more intelligent and we have the capability and understanding to help nurture and save this planet (as well as destroy it, I hasten to add). So a human life is worth more than an animals.
However... I do also believe we do not have the right to abuse and exploit animals as we see fit. Animal testing and other such abuses continue to appall me to this day, especially as 90% of experiments are not designed to find cures for diseases.
For example the military burn animals alive with flamethrowers to test weapons, bricks are smashed over monkeys heads to study brain damage, dogs and cats are sliced open while conscious to study the liver etc... it is 100% WRONG.

On a human level, yes were are more important. We are the ones that can stop things, like the Japanese killing whales. But on a lesser level, we, as the suppossed top of of the food chain, and keep coming up with consumable items that are responsible for contributing to the downfall of spieces.
If we were still hunter/gatherers, instead of supermarket Jocks that rely on fast and faster food, we would value the lives of animals more. Perhaps we would have more of an understanding of the animals and plants we consume.
I offer in this in response to your question, life is how you accept it. I eat meat, knowing how it is treated and killed. I also eat meat that I have killed. I always respect the animal I eat that I have killed.
The simple explaination is, life is a circle, the web of life always continues. Ask yourself one question. "Would a shark or crocodile ponder upon whether or not a human life is more important than my life?"
Nature is life!

Of course animals are just as important as humans!
That's why I have allowed my flat to become overrun with rodents and cockroaches.
Tomorrow I am taking my pot belly pig to my cousin's wedding. She told me I was forbidden. She's just a hater.
Forget that God put the animals in subjection to us, forget that He allowed people to eat the animals after the flood...I say that anyone who thinks that a human life is more important than an animal is just selfish!

Ethically there is no real difference in level of importance, but because WE think we are important WE impose our importance on other species and make an artificial hierarchical level of importance with us at the top.
How would we react if an alien lifeform more intellectually advanced than ourselves came to Earth?? Most films show them to be "superior" and therefore "dangerous".

Yes, but there are exceptions.
One being: If the animal is need to sustain human life. Then the animal becomes more important than a minimal loss of human life.
It's all about the greater good of man kind.

NO - less, if anything. What would the world be like if they started treating us as badly as we treat them? They wouldn't though, because they're creatures of nature and we've made the choice to take advantage of them and exploit them for our own greed. What a great race, huh?
