Those who just ride their whims, and don't go after high quality people (or aren't high-quality themselves) often end up stuck with people who simply don't last, and end up alone.
For those who simply don't ever find someone, I'm not sure... :(
It's certainly not a curse, but maybe a lack of strength in character, or fear of going out and facing people, and finding someone who's like you. Letting yourself live under such conditions is makes for self-pity, but grabbing yourself and making yourself go out there to find someone will secure endless treasure-troves of happiness for the rest of your life, because you won't be alone any more.

Curse, Blessing; suppose it's in how you look at it. Some people just don't have the social skills, some choose to be free of a life of quiet desperation as Thoreau put it. Every person has their own answer to this question, I don't think ther's a blanket statement to cover every possible angle here.
Personally, I choose to be single because I've had my share of girlfriends but never found one I wanted to be with 24/7. I think it would drive me nuts, better just having girlfriends who have their own place.

Its not a curse. For most people its a choice. For others its due to lack of self confidence or inability to get out. I am single due to all 3! I lack the confidence to believe someone will take me as I am! The inability to get out there due to my lack of confidence. And the choice of my children! lol

It's a curse if you don't have someone, but then it's a curse when you do have someone (for some people, though)!
