i wouldn't put a current employer down as a reference, unless that referee knew me and that i was looking for a job and they wouldn't do anything to cause trouble for me, basically that they are on my side.
you could create difficulties for yourself. be wise how you do it.

That's a tricky question. If your HR department doesn't see it coming, meaning that they think you're there to stay, then it may cause some problems. They might make things uncomfortable for you and, in essence, force you to leave.

But, the hiring company should be aware of this and they will use caution. Sometimes, they hire background check companies to represent them and they just call to verify employment. Your HR department may see this as only a credit check for a loan or something like that.

If that happens and your HR department asks you about it, just play dumb or say something to the effect, "Oh, I applied for a car loan and they're just verifying my employment."

Probably yes. Unless you're part of a known layoff, where the employer assumes you're looking elsewhere, I wouldn't do it.

New employers will understand that, but just have a good reason why you're leaving. Try to suggest the employer before last.

I would ask people you work with if you don't have a good feel for the companies response to this. If you are asking, can they fire you for looking for another job, the answer is no. Will they find a way to fire you if they want to, absolutly. Only those with a good sense of your company and how they feel about loyalty and/or commitment would be able to answer that.

100% yes. The only way it is going to work out well is if you work already want to get rid of you, and in that case they won't give you an amazing reference anyway.
