I recommend chess. I love the game. I started playing it when I was 5 and I still enjoy it very much.
You start out with the same number of pieces, one opponent has white pices, the other black. The one with white has the first move. The object of the game is to "kill" the opponent's king--which is defended by a line of pawn, two knights(the pieces look like horses), two bishops, two rooks and the most powerful piece on the board, the queen. Chess is a miniature battlefield and the player is in command of his army which he can lead to victory or defeat.

The problem with most educational games is that they're designed as educational tools first and games second (or later). This tends to result in games which are un-original and typically not a lot of fun. Worst of all "playing" the game often feels like being in class, which a kid gets enough of on a daily basis.

The best successes I've seen are playing/teaching games which are games first, and have some educational aspect as a secondary (or later) feature.

So the big questions becomes, what is it the 7th grader is trying to learn? Spelling, math, US History?

If trying to improve spelling and vocabulary try Scrabble, Boggle or Perquackey. Math's a tough one, as there aren't many good, fun games out there with a strong math component at an appropriate level. Sudoko might be one good approach, as well as some classic card games like Hearts or Spades. For history, most history games tend to be combat oriented, and somewhat involved, again a hard sell to a 12 year old. Some titles to look for: US Revolution - We the People; Civil War - Battleline; WWII - Memoir '44, Axis & Allies, Wild West - Ticket to Ride, TransAmerica.

For general "abstract" type games that encourage overall critical thinking and mental focus, I'll recommend Ingenious and Blokus.

Take a look at the Board Game Geek (link below) and search their rather sizable database of games for something that would match with what it is your student is trying to learn.

Happy gaming!
