Hi,
I have a Belkin router which is fine when just one item is using the connection but as soon as I switch on my laptop as well as the p.c. the connection is rubbish to the p.c. which my son uses to play Quake so therefore the whole idea of buying the laptop so that I could use it while he is on the computer has gone out of the window. Is there anything else I can buy so that this doesn't happen?

Yeah! find a higher speed provider! Cable! Or, get your son off the online games so someone else can use the net once in awhile! His online games are suckin the H outta your bandwidth!

So far all the answers have been internet speed related, but my reading of the question is 'when quake is being played on the PC, the network connection between the PC and my laptop is poor'---nothing to do with internet speeds or providers.

You need to provide details of the model you're using before anyone can give any decent advice, but one quick test would be to use an ethernet cable to connect the lappy to the router, see if that improves things.

Could you be a little more vague? Just kidding. Seriously, what happens when the laptop and desktop are online at the same time? Does it just shut down? Is the desktop wired to the router? What model Belkin? I have a hundred and one questions that all could affect how you remedy the situation. You can wait here on yahoo for a good answer, but you will have better odds winning the lottery or you can visit my forum below and I will strive to work with you one on one to solve the issue.

try to buy a faster connection, more powerful routers wont do anything, if u have, lets say, 256kbps DSL, upgrade to 512kbps DSL, then the connection of the econd computer will not be slowed down

to increase the range of the router, download a DSL/boradband hub, which doesnt connect to the net but acts as a bridge to 'forward' the connection to other areas the original router cannot reach initially

Sounds like a hardware problem... try to update your router and your Notebook wireless adapter.
