In the past she has always got on with it and never really struggled. she has one teacher for 2 subjects and has him every day, He gives her homework every night as well as the other subjects also giving homework every night.

Would be grateful for advise or feedback. My thoughts are to make appoinment with teachers involved. there are only so many hrs in the day,

My 11 year old granddaughter sometimes spends 3 to 4 hours on homework. She is a straight A student, but it takes everyone in the household to help.
I believe teachers pass out tons of home work rather than to be a good teacher. Infact, I believe they think that's what makes a good teacher.
Make that appointment ASAP I once forced a teachers hand and he admitted he picked on my daughter.
I told him then how do you expect her to do well in your class when she is aware of this?

She sounds like a high acheiver so four hours a night may be pretty normal. Once students start getting into 11th and 12th grade, teachers start preparing them for college, where they could have more than 6 hours of homework some nights. If you're still concerned however, talk to the teachers-- she shouldn't have 4 hours of homework every single night, but a couple times a week it can be expected.

If she is in college prep/advanced classes, this is what to expect. Like one of the other people said, it will help when it is time for college.

Also, you can not compare the amount of homework from years ago to now. The curriculums have changed and the detail of information has improved ... especially in the college prep and advanced classes.

Teachers do not pass out homework to prove they are good teachers. In fact, it is more work to give homework. If you pass out the homework, then it needs to be reviewed or graded. Believe me when I say it takes more effort to give homework than to just let the kids go home and do nothing. If the parents need to help with the homework, is this a bad thing? I always liked to see that the parents would sit down with their kids to get the work done.

My son regularly spent 4 to 5 hours on homework every night when he was in high school. I always felt that load was excessive. He is a perfectionist and always took college prep, advanced placement, and honors classes, but even for those, I felt the homework load was heavy. It almost seemed that each teacher thought he or she was the only one assigning homework. The homework load made it difficult for kids who had jobs or participated in sports, band, and other time-consuming activities. My son is fortunate in that he was on the 4x4 schedule in which he only had four classes each semester. Since one of those was always band, he really only had three classes in which homework was involved, but I still thought too much was assigned. Fortunately, he doesn't require much sleep, or he never would have completed his assignments.

Back in the 1960's when I was in school, I probably had two to three hours of homework, but I usually had a study hall so I could get some of it done during that class period.

My sister is a retired teacher, and she rarely assigned homework. She really worked the kids during class. Homework was usually just what they didn't finish during class.

I spent much more time on homework than that when I was in high school. Especially in 11th grade, it was my most difficult year. It's not unfair or atypical. It prepares students for college. I did 35-50 hours of homework a week in college. And that doesn't include studying for exams. She should be so lucky with 4 hours!

Sounds like a lot to me. I'd have thought 1 to 2 hours would be what I would aim for that age.

Three hours is not atypical while four hours is alot - its not too excessive.
