An "s" sounds like a hiss, while a "z" sounds more like a buzz.

when you are in a choir ,you will learn how to differentiate it .
ok let me tell you. the s sound like a snake hissing and the z soun will sound likea buzz

Sometimes s does sound like a z, for instance in words like busy and please.
