He was a quite good medical doctor. He joined the SS and was sent to serve on the East Front- USSR. By all records he was very good at his job (saving lives).
He got posted to Aushvitz/Birkenau and proceeded to use people for experiments- some were medically related, others were pure sadism. A lot of what we know today about the treatment of frostbite and burns comes from these experiments. He also diagnosed high altitude sickness and decompression- killing several thousand people in the process. SFAIK he experimented with transplantation (without the use of painkillers of course). Also research on childhood diseases and resistance- all involved the murder of children (especially Gypsy children who were renowned for resistance to illnesses)
He would be known as a "mad scientist" were it not for his complete disregard for human pain and suffering. The fact that he obviously considered only himself as "fully human" might have something to do with it. As it is, he will be remembered as the archetype of the mad murderous megalomaniac.
may he rot in hell.

All I can add is an experience twenty years ago, while I was working for the US Department of State.

There was a very tenacious group of people who thought that Mengele was in Paraguay. I don't know why they thought that, and anyhow he would have been very ancient.

I recall reading a few years later that he had died in some South American country, but not Paraguay.
