Great question, that I didnt know the answer to until I read the answers. Dobbers, what agreat word for them. I cooloect marbles & I'm not being a big head when I say I've got a good 30 dobbers. No surprize that my dobbers are far more scuffed than my regular marbles, they do get a battering when used in a game.

Marbles can be found in a variety of sizes from about 1/8" to 3" in diameter. Marbles 1/2" and below are called peewees. Marbles measuring about 9/16" to 11/16" are the "normal" marbles we are all familiar with. Marbles measuring 23/32" to 25/32" are called shooters, although the largest size allowed as a shooter in the official tournaments is 3/4". I call shooters much over 3/4" "oversize" or "large" shooters. 1" and over I call "boulders
The game itself is called Marbles, however the street names I've heard are Mibs and Ringer.

I believe the name of the 'big ones' varied according to the local region you live in. In Lancs. where I originated I think they were called 'Tollies'. You will probably find there are various names.
