I'm not Indian but I'm sympathetic. Sports management in India is faulty. With the population that you have there's bound to be a huge pool of talents for any given Olympic sport. But nobody cares to give consideration to the fact that it's Olympic sports and not cricket which generates the most image benefit. Hockey tohas declined, partly because young Indians were brought to think that an Olympic gold in hockey is nothing compared to cricket stardom. What to say about individual athletes? In past generations there have been some(like Balbir Singh in wrestling or P.T. Usha in track and field) who fought their way to the Olympic spotlight against the system managing Indian sports. Nowadays even such examples are gone. One has to start a re-thinking of all Indian sports structures and, in an Olympic cycle or two the results will be felt.

Due to the limited number of participants in the olympics, India stands a lesser chance of winning gold medals.

. What it comes down too is that the biggest and most popular sport in India is cricket. Other then field hockey(last medal was in 1980) other sports in India aren't very popular or lets face it not worth the monetary investment it will take too start a grass root movement.India has too many other important concerns then funding low profile sports when cricket is what consumes their sports interest.
