Great question,that I didnt know the answer to until I read the answers. Dobbers, what agreat word for them. I cooloect marbles & I'm not being a big head when I say I've got a good 30 dobbers. No surprize that my dobbers are far more scuffed than my regular marbles, they do get a battering when used in a game.

I'm sure they have many names, but technically they are called shooters cause in the game of marbles they are the ones that you shoot at the other marbles.

in scotland we called them dobbers.....now i'm trying to remember some other names for marbles.....monkey...very small marble....cats eyes.....green glass like what they put in the roads....steelies....steel ball bearings ........colourdies......the design in the middle was of more than one colour also trying to remember the name of the games we played only one i remember was stankie...played on a drain cover the one with all the holes in it and the object of the game was to rest your marble in the hole next to your opponent to win his marble that was a good question brining back memories of my childhood
