Because the alcohol lobby is powerful as are the drug companies. They don't want pot to be legal because it's so easy to grow it's hard to drive the price up and it's hard to get a corner on the market. They don't want people turning away from alcohol or drugs, where they make their money. It's always about money.

It was outlawed due to racism and business and has stayed illegal due to corrupt officials who use it as an excuse for targeting certain demographics of the population and as an excuse to funnel money, weapons, and political influence to other countries, namely those in Central and South America.
Really it doesn't make any sense, marijuana has medicinal uses, is far less intoxicating and detrimental to health than alcohol or cigarettes, would provide a HUGE income for government in the form of taxes, and by it's legalization would eliminate the need and opportunity for smuggling it into the US reducing the amount and demand for truly dangerous drugs which are shipped in along the same routes and purchased through similar channels.

It's not worse than smoking too..the negative effects of smoking marijuana are that someone cannot drive after smoking(just as alcohol)and long term use can cause cancer(just as smoking does). In some countries marijuana is not illegal and alcohol is.So the answer to your question is that is just law.Something should be illegal and for us is marijuana.

Because it helps law enforcement agencies make the easiest arrests possible. It is not as hard to arrest a weed-head as it is to arrest a guy on pcp and coke. Plus there is a lot of money to be made with prosecutions and lawyers. If it is taxed and regulated then they would need to come up with some other rediculous laws and personally I don´t think they have the time, in between their busy plans of setting off civil wars in foreign countries.

I totally agree that it should be legal but let me dispel some things said:
"Because the government can't make money on it."
Actually, if the government stopped the huge war on pot and instead taxed it, they could probably make billions.
"has stayed illegal ... as an excuse to funnel money, weapons, and political influence to other countries, namely those in Central and South America."
Why would the corrupt US politicians want to funnel money, weapons and political influence to other countries? I would think they would want to keep that instead of giving it away.
"marijuana has medicinal uses"
No actually medical marijuana is just made up by potheads to make it easer for them to get. There are prescriptions that have the same benefits as pot without getting the person high.

I BELIEVE IT IS PROHIBITED BECAUSE OF THE LAW AGAINST HEMP! LONG AGO WHEN DUPONT CREATED NYLON , HEMP WAS NOT ILLEGAL, BUT THEY BEING A RICH AND POWERFUL ORGANIZATION LOBBIED FOR THE HEMP TO BE CRIMINALIZED SO THAT THEY COULD SELL THEIR NEW SYNTHETIC(MAN MADE) FABRIC.
HEMP IS BETTER,LONGER LASTING AND OBVIOUSLY CHEAPER AS ALL YOU NEED IS DIRT AND SUNLIGHT AND WATER.
RESEARCH THIS TOPIC AND YOU WILL LEARN ALOT ABOUT LOBBYISTS AND THAT MOST LAWS ARE BOUGHT BY THEM STUFFING MONEY AND INCENTIVES DOWN OUR LAWMAKERS POCKETS!
AND YES I HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT STONED DRIVERS KILL PEOPLE IN CAR ACCIDENTS, BUT DRUNK DRIVING DOES...PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT FOR YOURSELF!
