My son is three days old, and about 15-30 minutes after each feeding (he is breastfed) he has an extremely watery, greenish-yellow bowel movement. He nurses every 2 hours, give or take, and nurses about 10 minutes on each breast during every meal. Is the diarrhea something i should be concerned about?

I am slightly lactose intolerant. i can eat most dairy products with little or no problems, but straight milk and some cheeses give me indigestion. could my baby be lactose inolerant/ allergic to my milk? he does not burp after most feedings.

No need to worry, most likely. Runny stools (mine still has them at 6 months!) are very normal in the breastfed baby. The first few days after birth, the stools will be greenish. It's normal to have a bowel after each feeding. It is hard to differentiate between normal stool and diarrhea. Here's a link that talks about infant stool and the greenish watery stool that your baby has (they describe the consistency of normal breastfed poop as pea soup). It is possible that your baby is allergic to milk protein (from you consuming dairy products), but it's actually rare. However, since you are slighly lactose intolerant, your baby might be also--but, I've been told by my pediatrician that this is also rare. This article also discusses that.

Talk to your pediatrician about the stools and your concerns about lactose intolerance. You should continue to breastfeed, though--it's so good for your baby. And, breastfeeding actually helps to prevent diarrhea!
Best wishes and congrats!

Hi There!...I am a third year midwifery student in the U.K. What you are discribing is within the normal limits of what we would expect a neonate of this age (3days right?) to be doing. You are breast feeding your baby which is the best thing you can do for your child, and at three days we would expect this type of movement. Your babys gut is growing all the normal flora so do not be concerned. You will find that the older your baby gets, its bowel movements will change in consistance and in colour. Do not worry!!...everything you have discribed is NORMAL!!!!!

in case your infant has yet another diarrhea like diaper. i'd definatley call the DR. interior the period in-between provide her some pedialyte this would save her hydrated. that's considerable push fluids. Newborns can dehydrate in the present day and this may lead directly to hospitalization. despite if that's observed via a fever or if he/she is refusing to consume i does no longer hesitate to call the Dr. now.

He's not getting any solid food so his bowl movements are going to be watery and the color of your milk. It's normal until they start to eat solid food. But if he looks like he's getting dehydrated, that's when the skin on his body can stand up when pinched then worry and call a doctor.

This sounds like a very normal and typical breastfed baby bowel movement, but to be on the safe side, you may want to check his temp and call your doctor. Don't worry about waking the doctor up, that is what he is THERE for!

It's totally normal. Babies of that age will not have a solid stool for some time to come, really not until they are on solids if you breastfeed him. I know it's scary, I was pretty surprised myself at how much their little digestive systems differ from grown folks. He's fine, little mama!

Sounds all completely normal.
extremely watery.... kinda like BREAST MILK!!!
All baby poop is green for the first good long time. If it was another colour (like red) then I'd be worried.
Any other questions? I'd ask your doctor. Go bug him. That is what you pay him for.

At that age, it is completely normal. Almost all of my son's diapers had watery poop in it at that age. That will change once he starts on solids.

i would ask his doctor but you might have to change his formula maybe its not working for him. Is he fussy and does he cry while he is pooping? You might have to switch to a soy formula but its nothing to be worried about but just ask ur doctor to be sure. Good Luck!!!
