I think they are trying to let you know that they don't want demands or expectations to be placed on them. It's also a cop-out for any future stuff-ups they may make - "I already told you I'm a free spirit".

The 'free spirit' will enjoy random, anonymous sex with multiple partners without the burden of fostering a sense of emotional intimacy with the 'casual' sex partners they most likely will only sleep with once while pledging their undying love to their 'partner'.
