Most other bald animals don't look too good. Especially if they have tufts of hair around their bodies.

There is a whole variety of reasons.
Firstly, our genetic code tells us that humans (female or male) are mates and will produce offspring. We find attractive what we perceive to be traits that we feel are good. In small communities this would have been influenced by those around us, and once upon a time how good a provider they are (i.e. can put food on the table). Maybe subconsciously we also select what we feel would be a strong gene pool for survival.
Mass media has influenced what we find attractive, by telling us what beauty is, which is sad in some ways as it is an example of 'free thought' being eroded.
Different cultures though have different opinions on what is attractive, and what some one in the West would find attractive maybe different to that of someone in the East.
Of course the best thing to do to answer your question is look in the mirror and see what is attractive about you. Do you think other animals might find you attractive, and good enough to mate with?

We learn societies expectations of beauty. Which is why the definition of beauty differs across the globe. For instance in some parts of the world wearing plates in your ears or tattooing your face could be considered 'good looking'.

because we're genetically programmed to find a mate and we carry around with us a 'blueprint' of who would make a good mate. Things that affect this are physical body shape (triangular upper torso for males breast and hip curves for females, both signs of good breeding stock) but also 'psychological' characteristics based on our own families ..........so there is some truth that all boys want to marry their mothers and girls their fathers :)
