I think you slightly misread the report. The reason why rich countires such as the US and UK have child poverty rates as high *** Portugal (a finding of the report) is in large part because of the neo-liberal economic policies that the country has followed since 1979 under Thatcher, and which Blair has continued. Blair is a Thatcherite.
Worse: "[c]hildren growing up in the United Kingdom suffer greater deprivation, worse relationships with their parents and are exposed to more risks from alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex than those in any other wealthy country in the world, according to a study from the United Nations."
This isn't surprising, given that the same neo-liberal economic policies is widening the gap between rich and poor to historic levels and creating a growing underclass.
Given that all three of the main parties are still committed to the same economic agenda, we need more than a General Election.

you cant be surprised by this, there have been people crying out for years to avoid this, but egnored. It started not long after the second world war. a time when faith hope and courage was the order of the day, it all faded into fun and materialism,Our faith has never been tested since those days. our country has been run for the benefit of teen agers. 50s teddyboys60s mods and rockers, beatnics.then the 70s and 80spunk rockers and whatever by then an old teddyboy like me had grown out of it. As time goes by the young were casting off the words and teachings of the old, because they thought they knew it all, and britains heart and soul spirit and courage to stand against the concept of evil was lost, the young rebels of then, are the useless leaders of now. What is tony blair , if not a guitar strummin bed hoppin student who thinks he knows it all. We are a selfish arragant nation that is being deliberatly dragged down by money grabbing materialist, with no spiritual knowledge and surely we are all to blame one way or anouther. We cant go forward, because we have been taken so far backward as to resemble the ancient cities of sodom and gomorah, in order to escape the mess we are in, we need to go back to see what it was that our ansestors
believed in, re-establish our true faith which is under attack, then go forth with that in mind.

Blaming the Government will not help. People have to seize the initiative. A child spends most of his time at home when growing up so there must be some problem at home that is causing this situation. The Family has broken up and that is the problem I feel and there we cannot blame the government. Values are taught at home. Our post-modern society devoid of all spiritual values and just looking at materialism is not helping. Each one of us has to make a contribution if some soution is to be found.

The UN may not always get it right but they are probably right on this one.
However you can't just blame the government although their inappropriate policies are a contributing factor.
It's all down to the decline of values and standards of behaviour - in the parents. In other words it is the British people who are doing it.
We have become a Godless nation and the results are plain to see.

Actually, it was the worst of 21 key economic countries such as Sweden, Germany, France and the US (which came 20th). We weren't the worst in the world...
The main reason for the poor result was down to the lack of quality time we spend with out children - as we're all too busy because we're at work or down the gym.
Maybe we should take some of the responsibility for our own children instead of trying to blame the government (who are useless but not really to blame for this one!)

It's very easy to criticise others...if you think you know and can do better....stand or Parliament...get elected...put things right.
