Hi all. I'm looking into purchasing a used Mercedes M series. I love the styling but I have heard mixed reviews about their dependability. What do you all think? Has anyone had a great experience with one? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the input thus far guys, to reply to the poster below, I say used as in maybe 2001-2003 generation. The prices seem to be so low on them and I'm wondering if thats cause they're a piece of trash..lol

Until Mercedes spread the love (or lack thereof), the ML single handedly destroyed Mercedes' previously great reputation for reliability. Now, a lot of their models have a reputation for being pieces of junk. They're trying to make improvements, but the jury is still out.

This is a pretty interesting question. When you say used, do you mean the previous generation, or the current generation? The current generation handles and performs like a sports car, with the same qualities of an SUV and finesse of a mercedes benz. But there are 2 down sides. First, in europe (where the car was engineered), no one drives an SUV, nor do car makers have much expertise in engineering them. THe last time europe really used SUVs, it was WW2, when pretty much everything had turned into rubble. Also, we're talking about a pretty expensive car here, and people don't want them getting beaten up, so they take it easy, and that is why most of the reviews are bad.

Ok the Dog and Lemon Guide says for 1998 - 2005 "Expensive, shoddily built and chronically unreliable. One of the worst vehicles of it's type ever built. Reliability - Appalling. Overall Rating - Avoid like the Plague."

The overall quality of M-B cars has dropped appallingly in the ten years between 1995 and 2005 and they have been thoroughly hammered for it. Some models have been described as designed and built by monkeys.

Too many models in too many versions and too many gadgets that work for a while then fail.
