Yep this one is probably going to cause some controversy...

For me, well a decent band with and excellent grasp of marketing.

Sorry Gene!

A little of column A, a little of column B...You can't deny that they do have some catchy songs, but without the makeup gimmick and whole kitch factor, I seriously doubt they would've ever gotten as big as they are.

I would say they were a great rock and roll band and a band with mediocre marketing know how. They had some great songs, and definitely hard rock, but their marketing made them seem soft. Their marketing was a success for a while, but people quickly got tired of it. Even today, though, I hear teenagers, my own children included, listening to their songs.

ALL classic rock and roll bands had fantastic marketing know-how, otherwise we would never have heard of them.

You're right though, most bands hated to be thought of as "commercial". To me, the "TUBES" pretty much captured this genre. Theatrical rock music.

Many purists would disagree with your describing Kiss as a "rock and roll" band.....

A band? What band? Don't you mean a conglomerate?!

Coffins? Clocks? Clothes? They just happened to make CD's in the process!

A grasp on marketing, yes, but also simply just targeted every single market possible.

Both.....I don't Gene would consider it an insult to say he has an excellent grasp of marketing.

i would have to say both. a lot of their songs are very catchy and were what people were looking for at the time, musically speaking. as far as "showy" wise, they are one of the best show bands out there. i have had this argument more than once with a friend of mine. granted, we were both drunk both times, but we had some good points.
